Video "The Chaos" - 800 Irregularities of English Language

If you can pronounce every word in this poem correctly, you will be speaking English better than 90% of the English speaking population!

"The Chaos" is a poem demonstrating the irregularity of English spelling. Written by Dutch writer, traveller, and teacher Gerard Nolst Trenité (1870–1946), it includes about 800 examples of irregular spelling and orthography. The first version has got 247 lines. This is a short version of 146 lines brought to you by Larisa Silas(aka me).

It is also a mnemonic aid for learners of English who can never tell how to pronounce words encountered in writing.

Many native English-speaking readers will find the poem a revelation.

Hi! My name is Larisa and I am a passionate teacher of English language with 13 years of teaching experience. I hold Linguistics and Teaching degree and ESL qualification. Since graduation, I have been teaching English in schools, business centers, colleges, and online covering students of age ranging from 4 to 50.

My teaching philosophy is that all students are endowed with the ability to learn and each of them is of a big value in themselves. I see each student as an individual, unique, capable of more than he/she thinks. The global society of today needs the students to be informed and knowledgeable, highly understanding and tolerant, adaptable, but critical, having a great variety of perceptions, as well as appreciation for differences among people, self-confident, respectful, and trustworthy. All these are to be accomplished through dynamism and excellence in teaching.

Students must be taught to learn on their own and encouraged to continue to do so even after formal education has ended. The world and society are open to change, and students are unlikely to remain in static life situations. Therefore, they must develop productive thinking habits as a basis.

Students should learn to think clearly, and become able to express their ideas, perceptions and beliefs coherently, even to those with whom they have significant differences.

I believe in the idea "educate for the world". We cannot possibly know how the world would be like in the future, therefore we must educate as broad as a scope as possible, in order to create adaptable individuals that are able to function in as varied environments as possible in the future. The consensus is to teach for the world as we know it, whereas the world is a rapidly changing one.

I consider enthusiasm for what I do and my subject of great importance. This single element stands for success in teaching, demonstrating that not only the importance and joy can one get by learning, but the learning process in itself as being meaningful to students.
